Course Information
Description General survey of various styles of music in America. Topics may include jazz, ragtime, folk, rock, and contemporary art music which promotes the appreciation of cultural expressions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Identify the elements, styles, and musicians representative of music within the chosen style(s). 2. Analyze the elements and structures of music using appropriate terminology. 3. Critically evaluate the influence of social, political, technological, and/or cultural ideas on the chosen musical style(s). 4. Articulate an informed personal reflection of the chosen musical style(s).


Students will engage in active listening to identify, interpret, distinguish, and critique the elements of music in instrumental and vocal music(classical, jazz, music for the stage and screen, and classic rock). (PSLO 1abdcd; 3abcd; 4abc).


Students will be able to summarize the history and development of musical styles as connected to composers, musical terms, and music genres (PSLO 1abcd; 3abcd)


Students will be able to map, associate, and compare the development of music with the different periods of human history (PSLO 1abcd; 3abcd; 4abc)

Course Policies
Instructor Policies All grades are final.
Attendance Policy Please email me before class starts if you will be tardy or absent for any reason -- also include all school activities in advance, please.  4 or more unexcused absences will negate all points earned, and will result in a failing grade for the course.  Three tardies to class will count as one unexcused absence.  The next passage is directly copied from the LSCPA Student Handbook: 

"Regular and punctual class attendance is important to student success. Instructors formulate an attendance policy consistent with departmental policies, but suited to the needs of the particular course.

Attendance policies are enforced in a consistent and uniform manner. However, determination of whether an absence is excused or approved is the responsibility of the instructor, except in the case of an approved absence for a college-sponsored activity or religious holy day.

A list of absences, approved because of college-sponsored activities, is maintained in the office of the approving Dean or department chair/director. Absences also may be approved by the instructor. Approved absences call for the privilege to make up examinations and written assignments without penalty. This privilege does not extend to unapproved absences. Students may request the Office of Student Services to notify faculty members prior to or during an EXTENDED absence due to personal or family illness, accident, hospitalization, etc. This notification does not constitute an excused absence from class; however, it does advise the instructor as to the reason the student is absent and of the expected date of return to class."

Additional Information A general level of kindness and respect is assumed and appreciated in our classroom. I am here to help you succeed, if I am allowed. To that end: Recreational use of electronic devices during normal class hours distracts other students, disrupts the class, and wastes class time. Please turn your phones to vibrate or silent when you enter the classroom.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
HB 2504 This syllabus is part of LSCPA's efforts to comply with Texas House Bill 2504.
Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect As per Texas law and LSCPA policy, all LSCPA employees, including faculty, are required to report allegations or disclosures of child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities, which may include a local or state law enforcement agency or the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.
